With its removal of all color, NORCO’s pixel art draws the player into a sci-fi world inspired by Louisiana. The game is full of detailed scenery that takes you on an emotional journey through various areas in New Orleans, like forests and swamps and other locations throughout America where pollution has occurred due to oil refineries running rampant during wartime or natural disasters such as Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, etc.
A sense of place is created as you sink into Maura’s rich field recordings and sound design. A driving, post-industrial electronic score from Gewgawly I provides an immersive environment for this story about
two friends who move to New Norcia with their grandfather after his retirement home fails inspection; they soon discover that he’s not very content living there anymore…
The first thing you should know about NORCO is that it’s a fascinating, thoughtful game with well-written dialogue and complex mysteries at its core. There are moments where the writing feels like classic pulp fiction–it has all of those catchy phrases we remember from our youth! But there are also some excellent techy details throughout; I loved how they used modern-day methods as part of this story which felt very “now.”
If anything, though, these elements made me feel more connected to both sides regarding what happened before durithe ng World War II era.
